FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your questions - answered.
First of all - nice work!
You’re in the right place.
Sign up for my Free Parent Guide by clicking HERE. You’ll discover the three huge mistakes even the smartest students make in exams, essays and assignments AND exactly what to do to ensure your teen avoids them.
After you request the guide, you’ll receive my weekly email tips and videos, plus future invites to my parent info events. Parents LOVE these because they see exactly where their teen’s missing out on ‘easy’ marks and how to turn that around (with real life examples, full explanations and instantly-actionable strategies).
You'll also be able to find out more about the 10 Week Grade Transformation Program (and some juicy bonuses I'm including!)
This is my flagship program for students in Grades 9 - 12/13 who are studying hard but either:
- not getting the results they really want or are capable of
or
- getting great results but studying SO many hours and feeling way too much stress in order to get 'em.
In the program, I train your teen, step by step, in the skills and techniques required to tackle any task with confidence and clarity so they achieve their best possible results, and enjoy the journey along the way.
The BEST thing you can do is figure out why they got that result and how to change things in future.
If you leave it unchecked, or just have them work harder next time, then you risk the next two questions in this FAQ list being your next question.
As a starting point, it’s likely they missed the WHAT or the HOW somewhere.
In other words, they...
- didn’t know precisely what the question or task was asking
OR
- didn’t know what the marker really needed to see in their response
OR
- knew both of those, but didn’t know how to put it across in a succinct and sophisticated way.
I explain all in the Free Parent Guide.

Figure out why they’re having to work so hard to achieve their results. It’s likely that they’re making one of these three mistakes and it’s stopping them from either:
- achieving the same results but with less effort, time and stress.
OR
- achieving better results, i.e. those that they’re actually capable of.
OR (as many of my students find)
- both!
First critical step: find out the root cause of the lack of motivation.
There are three main reasons why students aren’t motivated to study.
It’s NEVER because they just don’t care.
I discuss this issue in my parent webinars, plus, here are two videos where I discuss this issue:
- You don’t need motivation! (Here’s what’s REALLY going on)
If they’re going to ‘show they know’ when it comes to assessment, your teen needs the skill of APPLYING their subject knowledge according to the requirements of any task, essay, assignment or exam question.
There are specific techniques and strategies to be able to do this.
For example, there are the six elements of exam technique
and
the two-step ‘Topic and Focus’ system for breaking down and truly understanding the requirements of any essay question.
I teach these and SO much more in the 10 Week Grade Transformation Program.
This is all about getting them better results with LESS effort and hours.
Hard-working students have enough to do already.
So there’s no additional homework to submit and the content can be completed in approx 1 hour per week (and at a time that works for them).
Because it’s all online and instantly accessible, it’s totally flexible - so no need to worry about clashes with other commitments.
Simple answer: Yes!
Here’s why:
The strategies and techniques I teach are ‘universal’, meaning they work across any state or assessment system, in any year group from Y9 - 13.
The skills are just that; skills.
They are not subject-specific.
The steps to writing a detailed analysis are the same whether your teen is analysing data for a Chemistry experiment in Year 12, analysing sources for a History inquiry in Year 10, or analysing the language of Shakespeare in Year 9.
Having taught and examined across multiple states and countries, I know that the requirements for success come down to the same key models and concepts, from the IB to the HSC, from GCSE to NCEA.
Nope.
The real reasons for procrastination or poor time management aren’t solved with a different diary.
Efficient study is mastered when your teen can determine precisely what they need to do, knows exactly how they’re going to do it, and has the skills and systems to follow through on it.
Here's an excerpt from a coaching session with a student who found themselves procrastinating, despite being dedicated and committed to their study:
- Why even top students sometimes procrastinate (and how to overcome it)
When they eradicate the confusion and break everything down into manageable chunks, they can independently complete any task that’s thrown at them - using any type of calendar, diary or planner.
Tutors can be fantastic if your teen is struggling in a particular subject.
For example, they need additional support in understanding texts in English, or they need extra help in understanding mathematical concepts and computing them correctly.
However, if your teen is generally understanding their subject content and ‘gets it’ in class, then it’s likely not their subject knowledge that’s limiting them.
It’s their understanding and skills in APPLYING that knowledge in the way the tasks, questions and mark schemes require.
In which case, learning more and more subject knowledge won’t increase their results.
The Free Parent Guide will help you quickly figure out which of these is the case for your teen.
Plus, here's a video where I cover this topic, plus 3 tips for what to look for in a tutor:
